The ALASKAN HUSKY comes in two models the HDM4 or "S" non keypad and the HDM5 or "SK" short keypad model, both are IP68 and Mil Spec G rated. The Alaskan is part of our Core range, As everyone knows the Core means RELIABILITY & TOUGHNESS, VERY TOUGH. The Alaskan has a thickened alloy chassis encased in a grade 4.0 poly-carbonate enclosure, the PTT switch cover plate is of a hardened plastic with a 100% area of PTT operation, making the Alaskan both very tough and very easy to use.

The ALASKAN HUSKY is a new design with an eye on the higher entry level to mid tier level of DMR hand portables and specifically the industrial and heavier commercial market area.
The alloy chassis is also thickened so as to better stand drops and knocks, the poly-carbonate case is 4.0 rated, able to shrug of knocks, drops and bumps and a thick imbedded in the chassis seal ensures an IP68 submersible capability rated at 1.2M for 40 minutes.
The ALASKAN HUSKY specification is impressive by any standard, the battery selection no less so, supplied as standard with a 2200mAh lithium ion battery offering up to 21 hours of operation on a 5/5/90 duty cycle.
Private call, Group call and All call are available and the -121dB receiver sensitivity gives great over the ground and through building coverage, the audio is loud and clear, rated at 1000mW, however with the Speaker optimisation selected it sounds twice as loud as that!
At 116.5mm tall by 59.5mm wide by 39.50mm deep it falls into the compact hand portable size category, yet it has a carved from granite feel to it, a heft which suggests that this HUSKY is the real deal, a radio that can take it - anywhere - anytime! In our tests it took Fifty Six spinning drops from a height of 12 to 19 feet onto solid 2 inch slate to stop the Husky Alaskan from running (*see below).
The PTT is another point in question, At Wolfsin our PTT's don't have a sweet spot on the PTT cover plate, OUR WHOLE PTT IS THE SWEET SPOT! Press the PTT anywhere on the PTT cover plate and you will hear and feel a positive click, the red LED will light up, AND THE CALL OR COMM WILL BE MADE! No mistaken non calls in cold, wet or windy environments or when your under threat and you really need to make that call/comm!
The ALASKAN HUSKY has two side function buttons which can be programmed to enable features such as scan, vox etc. A discreet but large orange top mounted button is reserved for emergency call.

ALASKAN HUSKY HDM5

The ALASKAN HUSKY HDM5 series shares batteries, aerials, belt clips and charging pods/cradles with the HDM4 model, both are IP68, in fact the Husky HDM5 has a fully encased and sealed keypad assembly which allows no water/liquid ingress at all.
The Alaskan HUSKY HDM5 is a hard working hand portable (as are all HUSKY Radios) but the OLED style display uniquely displays in colour, giving greater clarity, a higher sense of style which manages to sit well with its heavy duty look and feel. A hardened plastic, back lit, keypad is both durable and intuitive and like the PTT of a size and tactility that can operated with gloves on.
Both Alaskan Husky models use a unique multi-pin audio accessory connector with a screw in fixing to ensure reliable communication and its IP68 water proof rating. A full range of audio accessories is available.
The Alaskan HUSKY Battery is also rated to IP68 in all formats 2200, 2600 and 3000mAh.
A heavy duty, highly sprung, screw in belt clip with a full 55mm belt width ensures that the ALASKAN HUSKY will stay on your belt or attached to your rucksack. In fact the screws used in the ALASKAN are among the longest in the industry with not one but two lock rings to keep the belt clip attached to the radio body. Of note is the general toughness of the belt clip that even in our ruggedness test of 56 drops from 12-19 feet the belt clip remained attached and fully operational.
We pack a lot of quality metal into our standard 90mm aerial and from an RF coverage perspective it is around 2.0dB down on our 150mm long range 1/4 whip UHF wideband aerial. This is exceptional for a shortened aerial and as such it works well, really well for most RF applications.
Indeed during our extreme testing involving (but not limited to) fifty six 12 to 19 foot drops the aerial socket broke* (two solder connections) but the 90mm aerial itself survived all fifty six drops and remains in use.
All of our HUSKY models are reliable, tough and rugged, while our smart HUSKY hand portables, mobiles and repeaters just keep getting smarter with new firmware options being added.

The ALASKAN HUSKY has been designed to allow water trapped in the mic hole or speaker chamber after heavy rain to be cleared with just a few double taps of the radio against the users leg or hand (DTAP), in normal or heavy rain conditions the Alaskan can clear both the mic and speaker with a few more double taps against the leg or hand.
The acid test for all hand portables is when fully submersed, the Alaskan was fully submerged for up to 2 hours in 10 inches of water. In this test the mic hole in the Alaskan was made clear by tapping it against the hand/leg 3-6 times within two minutes or less, the Speaker chamber was cleared with within 10 minutes and 8-12 double taps against the leg or hand to give a near full recovery of both transmitted and received audio. This was completed in an outdoor location/situation and not in a warm dry environment. We rate the HDM4 at 15/20 on the AQUAR scale and the HDM5 at 13/20 on the AQUAR scale.
In fact, if the ALASKAN if placed on a warm radiator (not HOT) then both the mic and speaker are operational within 1 to 4 minutes. This is a high capability within the market section for entry and mid level DMR radios.
As per the GRIZZLY G2, the ALASKAN HDM4 & HDM5 use a dedicated noise reduction circuit which is fitted as standard so as to quieten background noise and a software/firmware driven speaker optimiser to enhance audio quality and loudness/volume, this results in an audio output that is among the very loudest in the market.
The ALASKAN audio socket is a closed multi-pin design common to all high end, high IP rated water proof DMR hand portables, although IP67 can be achieved with a two pin audio socket configuration, it is considered that a closed multi-pin design is more reliable at greater depths than a two pin configuration.
Most common audio accessories are available for the ALASKAN HUSKY including the sniper style D ring earpiece with in line PTT/Mic and an FBI style acoustic tube earpiece with in line PTT/Mic. A IP67 speaker mic (with a 3.5mm jack) is also available. More audio accessories are available now and others are in design.
The Alaskan can operate in hybrid Analogue mode with CTCSS and DCS, Reverse tone for repeater use, scrambler, Call tone for start and stop of call (programmable), VOX, Scan and TOT along with BCLO and BTLO available to make blending into a analogue system possible. Basically all the essentials needed to operate in analogue in the digital market place.
DTAP: Almost all modern digital radios are designed with small to very small mic holes and horizontal speaker grills which can simple clog up with rain, water or other liquids. This can and does reduce the effective spoken to mic audio input by up to 95%, further the design of many of the radio case speaker grills also trap water in the speaker chamber thus making the already greatly reduced transmitted audio, when received, even quieter! In other radios this can be so quiet that the received audio simply cannot be heard and these hand portable radios rate a 1/20. AQUAR is our rating for how well a hand portable can expel water from its mic hole and speaker grill when soaked by rain water or submersed for a long period of time. A few IP54/55 radios can expel rain from the mic or speaker grill quite well but would be broken beyond repair if submerged in water, some IP66-67-68 hand portables survive well when submersed or "hosed" down with water but SOME can take up to 24 hours to recover both transmitted and received audio.
